  1. You give some great reasons to add the WP Translator plugin. I’ve considered doing it just for people who prefer non-english language but if google will also spider it for each language… Sweet!

  3. Hi Ian, I’ve used the plugin myself and I agree that it will bring in a lot more traffic to your site. My only problem with it is that the quality of that traffic is rather poor and I found that if using Adsense to make money you’re actually hurting your income despite the fact that you’re getting additional traffic.

  4. Hi Ian. I wouldn’t install this plugin. It may bring in some more traffic but the translation is extremely bad. My language is German and when I translate your blog into German I have to read it more than one time to understand what it means.

I translated a text from German into English to show you how it looks like. Would you visit a Blog with the following English a second time?

Her’s the translation from German into English (it’s text from a news blog from Switzerland):

AMG starts with new dynamics into autospring 2009: Already shortly after conception of the new presents the performance mark disgust-ate within Mercedes-Benz Cars the new E 63 AMG. The dynamic, everyday life-suited sport sedan convinces 63 AMG by high power ratings, fascinating driving dynamics and transfer of technology of the High performance Roadster SL.

    Cheers,
    Daniel

@Daniel, thanks for the heads up on the translation. I had my suspicions on the quality and you have now confirmed them. Looks like it might work for some languages ok and others no so good.

If anyone else can test it for me and let me know I’m sure others will be interested to know.

  5. I had this plugin installed for a while and the translated pages are now good indexed by Google and a lot of traffic is coming in from other countries (about 70% of my traffic comes now from non-english speaking countries). But in my case, it does not convert very well.

  9. Yep, I found your blog translated into Russian via Google and translation is in realy poor quality. Intl traffic in this case is trash. In my case I spent more then minute to understand that your blog isn’t doorway. I wont recommend to use this plugin, the better way to attract intl visitors is to create special category for multilanguage topics.

Ok so it looks like the translation plugin may not be as good as what I first thought. Maybe I will have to start looking into having proper translations done and post them under those languages. It’s sure to be a benefit overall.

  10. Ian, I’m sure proper translation would be the best way to go but I also think that one should consider whether the cost would be worth it. Personally I am not sure that my posts but bring in enough traffic in order to pay for the proper translation of it.

There’s another argument for using human translation: you’ll get automatically the translators’ friendship. If you let translate your posts into the official languages of the European Union by human translators, that means 22 new friends with their own network of contacts who’ll spread your content! Translation by freelance professionals starts at 0,05 EUR per word. You can easily find translators by posting your job on e.g. http://is.gd/v35e

@ Marc Plancke, thanks for the heads up and some interesting ideas about the value of translations by “humans”. I’m just trying to decide what would be the best way to organise it on my blog.

  13. I installed this but google seems to be unable to crawl the translated pages, resulting in a lot of unreachable pages. Does anyone know how to get the spider to index the translated pages?

    @Mike,

Good question, but I have some more bad news.

It seems like the translations aren’t the best and in some ways could hurt your site. I am doing some more research into this to see if actually using a translation plugin helps or hurts our blogs.

Will let you know what I find out.

  15. I haven’t tried this plugin yet. I will just check if this will work for me. By the way, I just noticed there aren’t any list of the Do-Follow blogs anymore…but I’ve got a question [I'm still kinda new in d seo thingy] if you could assist me with. Are “No-Follow” links completely irrelevant to google? cos there was a site i pasted a link on, i clearly saw it was a “no-follow” link [with the seo firefox thing] but google soon acknowledged it, and credited me for it.

  20. Now that’s a really cool plugin! I had never heard of this plugin until now, but I can definitely see how adding this translator plugin can help increase your international traffic without being overly intrusive.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

  21. The plugin is very useful. However, you can integrate Google translate directly from Google page, with a little embed code inserted in pages.

  23. Global Translator is a very interesting way to develop a site in another language and have visitors. Although translations have an error rate, the reader may click on the banners and we’ll have some sales.
