Pay Close Attention: Creating an Opt-In List Creates a Solid Customer Base

Let’s cover some basics for those who are new to building a profitable Internet Business.

What is an Opt-in List?

An Opt-in email is a list in which customers request information which is served as email.

In the old days (I can say that now considering I am in my 40’s) it was, and still is, called a mailing list. This was one where you gave people your name and mailing address so they could send you more information or a regular subscription letter. It’s still used today by a lot of companies, but as technology changes more and more companies are using e-mail to do the same job.

What are the benefits of an Opt-in List?

One benefit is it saves a lot of money because e-mail as we know it is free. With regular mail you have to consider the cost of printing the material, putting it in an envelope, then posting it, all which incur additional costs compared to emailing someone.

Another benefit can be the fact using e-mail helps the environment because we don’t use paper, envelopes and stamps, but we do use electricity which adds to the pollution, but that’s a whole other topic for another day.

In some cases your e-mail list can also be worth money if you are creating it to on-sell to another company. Be sure you inform subscribers this is what you are going to do with their details otherwise you could get yourself into some serious trouble.

Email marketing is a big business. It only takes a few minutes to write an email and then it can be sent in as fast as five seconds. It is all about deliverability, giving subscribers newsletters and content to attract them to back your website. In its essence, this is a way to build a relationship in between you and customers, easily building trust. A mutual relationship has always proven to be an effective marketing instrument.

What you need to create an Opt-In List.

First of all you need something to offer people in order for them to want to subscribe. The content might be newsletters, attachments and even reports. Recently I contributed to a Giveaway site which was responsible for increasing my list by 40%. In this case I offered a free piece of software in exchange for the persons name and email. Customers are the ones that require information, it is up to you to adapt to their needs.

To gather the names and email addresses from people you will also need a template of some kind on a web page. There are a number of ways you can do this and some don’t even require you to host your own page, it can be a part of a membership site similar to Affiliate Cash Secrets which supplies everything you need to get started.

A good and well written terms and conditions agreement is essential to prevent legal troubles in the future. Include information about the services and any limits. Account suspension and cancellations must also be stipulated to encourage formalities between both parties.

Also, to avoid any trouble, there should also be the ability to opt-out of your mailing list. This can be enabled through buttons in the email. It encourages mutual trust even with non customers; this all strengthens your image as an honest webmaster.

Adding more content must be done carefully. Putting very long messages or stories can sometimes bore your customers, keep them short and put more facts rather than incoherent stories that don’t matter.

With this opportunity to enhance revenue, there is also a catch, the trouble of being blacklisted. Spam is classified as an additional burden of the internet that is passed from the ISP to the users, this creates traffic. But most of the time, spam is unauthorized emails. As dangerous as it is, it can end any good websites reputation if its emails don’t comply with email clients’ standards, hence must be avoided at all costs.

With Email being the choice of webmasters to create a more stable customer base, it is undeniably a great tool.

One of the best services, and one I have used since starting my Internet Business, is Aweber. It’s fairly inexpensive when you consider the functions which are included, but when you are starting out it can be a little out of reach.

I’m considering starting a service to help you get started without the heavy outlay of opening an Aweber account. This will be where you ’share’ my aweber account for a short time and I’ll do all the work for you. If you would like more information about this then leave me a comment below and I will get back to you ASAP.

Regards,

Ian Richardson
