I would like to add that in promoting your contest, you can join communities of bloggers like BlogCatalog. If your contest is good, a lot of them would join thus helping you spread the word about the contest.

yeah, joining communities of bloggers can help promote your contest quite a bit. Or you might even consider doing a blogging contest which can lead to quite a few links to your site all linking to your contest info.

Contests are great ideas for getting traffic but beware of what you are giving away at first. I have heard crazy stories of bloggers giving away iPods but not enough people really find out about it and they end up getting little traffic for a big investment.

This is the most proper way of bringing traffic to your blog.Running a content will make people run to your blog and hence your traffic will increase.

we all know about the running contest can get you some benefits & some loss & these are points are already described by the previous ones before me so i dont think any point to tell you rather than what ever we are gonna do for our blog we should consider for once before commiting any kind!

It is right that in an Online Business, you don’t need to wait for the traffic and you need to do something for people to visit your site. You may want to see how Mike Porricelli let people come back on his Rate your Demo and the feedbacks are good.

I agree about RateYourDemo. Mike Porricelli, Cool & Dre, and their web team did a great job on building a model to increase REAL traffic without having to spead a lot of money. People have many reason to stay and surf on their site.

Hi Ian, great idea about the contests. However as with traditional offline contests that award prizes, aren’t there some tax ramifications because of the value of the prizes? I’m uncertain as to how this may apply to contests or any sort of transaction of this nature that occurs online.

Initiating a contest can really help in increasing your site visitors. The more attractive the contest is, the more people would be interested in joining your contest, the more visitors you’ll get.

A contest is a highly effective method for driving visitors to your site. It can also be used for your affiliate program like you can run an affiliate contest and rewarding the most performing affiliates who will bring sales for your product.
End result is you get tons of traffic as the affiliates would be motivated to bring the most traffic to your website in the hope of getting more sales and the prizes.
Prizes can be in the form of money, digital cameras, mobile phones etc… These type of gifts can be a huge incentive for a contest.

I have tried a couple of contests that never got off the ground. I thought they were great ideas but I have concluded that it was more about timing than anything else. I launched them around the presidential elections when attention was hard to catch.

Contests and freebies are great deals in building traffic to your site. However, what you’re offering must be very interesting to your visitors. In this way, they won’t feel that visiting your site is just a waste of time.

I think apart from contests, blog carnivals are also a good way to get authority links & traffic as well.

We also can create a plugin that will content a contest. for example I show one blog that put the top commentator on the side bar. I believe this one also can make people leave a lot of comment.

Running a contest is a great idea, but it has to be well executed. I’ve seen some really successful contests that brought in long-term traffic with return readers. Good post!

Interesting post. I like the part where it’s important to determine the theme of the contest. Most companies do not think about this and risk alienating their customers.
